"I ran my first 5k!"

 

I'd always been fairly active, but as I turned 30 I realized I'd let myself slip.  In my last year of grad school, I picked up my friends unhealthy eating habits.  When I moved to Orlando to start my new job, I weighed 195 and some of my size 14 clothes were getting tight!

 

In my new environment, my healthier eating habits reasserted themselves.  I joined the gym and started exercising more.  But I still wasn't really motivated.  Unsurprisingly, I hit a plateau at about 185.

 

After my 1st year here, I hired Diane and started training with her 3 times per week.  She set up a strict diet and I kept food logs which Diane reviewed every week.  And right away she put me on the treadmill and encouraged me to start running (something I hadn't done for almost 7 years!)

 

But the really amazing thing was that I actually ran a 5k - something I never imagined myself doing.  It was an incredible feeling to cross the finish line!  Since that first 5k, I've run 5 or 6 more and improved my time by about 7 minutes.  And Diane was at every race cheering me on. I don't ever expect to run a 6 minute mile, but its thrilling to be in a huge crowd, all fitness levels, all trying their best, just as I am.  Its a great feeling to save just enough to sprint to the finish line, trying to beat the clock and my own best time.

 

I'm still working on the last 10 lbs and I sometimes struggle to get to the gym or cook a lean chicken breast.  But I know I can do it.  And I know that Diane will be there to push me to do my best.
